Haunted Mansions Around The World

“Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion.” - one of the best opening lines in an attraction ever!

The Haunted Mansion is a hugely popular attraction that opened first in Disneyland and then opened in four other Disney Parks around the world! But each version is not just a carbon copy of the original, they are five distinct versions that each offer a unique experience while holding onto the original spirit of the ride. (Pun very much intended)

The original Haunted Mansion lives at Disneyland Resort in New Orleans Square and opened on August 9, 1969.  This attraction is designed to resemble a southern style plantation house and invites guests into its spooky halls where you’ll visit 999 happy haunts!  This attraction also gets a very special overlay every year in the fall - the Nightmare Before Christmas themed overlay where Jack Skellington and friends take over the mansion to prepare for the holidays!

In Walt Disney World the Haunted Mansion can be found in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom and opened on October 1, 1971.  This Dutch Gothic/Hudson River Valley styled attraction was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom and was designed after a more colonial style to blend in with it’s Liberty Square location.  Supposedly it was specifically inspired by the Harry Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania.  While there are many similarities to the Disneyland version, there are some more elaborate scenes and differing elements including the infinite staircase room (added in 2007)

In Tokyo Disneyland the attraction opened April 15, 2983 in Fantasyland and is a mix of both American parks though visually does replicate Magic Kingdom’s more but is deliberately more overgrown and unkempt!  Inside the attraction however, the inside track is more similar to Disneylands and like it’s California counterpart it also receives a Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay for the fall and winter months!

In Disneyland Paris we find Phantom Manor which opened on April 12, 1992 and is very different both visually and in it’s story!  This version is built in the Second Empire style and is located in Frontierland. This attraction focuses more on the doomed bride of the estate and features some of the scariest music, most realistic skeletons and instead of a lively graveyard at the end of the attraction guests ride through Phantom Canyon, an eerie undead Western Town.

Finally in Hong Kong Disneyland we find Mystic Manor in Mystic Point!  This attraction opened on May 17, 2013 and while it’s inspired by it’s spooky counterparts it’s not about ghosts  - this Victorian style manor is filled with magic! To respect cultural differences in Hong Kong this attraction makes no mention of the afterlife or spirits, instead it tells the story of an enchanted music box that has the ability to bring everyday inanimate objects to life!
